On Thursday 3rd April, Manuela Perteghella, MP for the constituency of Stratford-on-Avon, used a debate in parliament to call on the government to address the tariffs announced by President Trump the previous night.

In her speech, Perteghella mentioned the growing concern surrounding the tariffs, especially for farmers both inside and outside of her constituency. The MP then proceeded to direct a question to the Business Secretary to answer some of the distressed business owners and farmers of Britain.

Speaking during the debate, Liberal Democrat MP for Stratford on Avon, Manuela Perteghella said:

“The tariffs announced by Trump last night will be concerning for many businesses in the UK, not least British farmers, including in my constituency of Stratford-on-Avon. We all recognise that Trump will use the imposition of tariffs to try to get concessions from countries around the world.

“Will the Business Secretary reassure the whole country and commit today that he will not agree to any deal with the US that would lower food standards and undermine British farmers?”

Speaking after the debate, Manuela Perteghella said:

“Trump’s tariffs threaten the jobs and living standards of people here in the UK, in the United States, and around the world.

“We must stand up to this trade war in order to reduce the impact that the tariffs will have on our local, national, and international economy. If we do not act against these tariffs soon, the impact will be much more devastating for businesses and industries, and may have a longer-lasting effect.

“We need to get Trump to drop his tariffs, and more broadly turn the world away from a path towards nationalism and isolationism that ultimately causes us all damage. We must also ensure that we strengthen our ties with our European partners in order to reduce our reliance on the US.”
